"Nirmal Verma"--- The story writer per excellence

Nirmal Verma was one of the most PROLIFIC & famous story writers of contemporary Hindi Literature. He was jointly awarded the 35th Jnanpith award in 1999, with Gurdayal Singh.

He was born on 3rd April, 1929 in Shimla. This 77 year old man's childhood passed in the hills. Later, he came down to Delhi for his Master’s Degree in History. For a while he taught at the University. For the next few years he lived in formerly Czechoslovakia. He spent a few years in Britain too.

Nirmal Verma's first collection of stories 'Parinde'was published in 1958, followed by 'Maya Darpan', 'Derh inch ooper', 'Dhoop ka tukra', 'Andhere mein', 'London ki ek raat', 'Jalti saari', 'Raat ka reporter', 'Ek chithra sukh', 'Zindagi yahaan aur wahaan' etc. He has also received 'Sahitya Academy Award' in 1985, 'Bharat Bharti Award' in 1989 on behalf of 'Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan' & 'Murtidevi Award' in 1995.

However as a Laureate Nirmal Verma has his own brand and place in the Literary circles. His writings are a class apart representing the new wave Hindi writing. For him an award is only a milestone on the long and assiduous literary journey.
